This is an apartment block that was built approximately 15 years ago and our client’s brief was for a more current and contemporary look incorporating their beautiful art collection, antiques and iconic furniture. They wanted a home that not only made a statement but also reflected their souls.
In order to achieve this we gutted the apartment and made structural changes that opened up space and maximised light. With these older apartment blocks, one tends to find lower floor to ceiling heights, smaller compartmentalised rooms and cluttered kitchen and bathroom layouts. These are the issues that we addressed in the renovation.
We did this by removing the standard height doors and replacing them with floor to ceiling doors throughout the apartment. Through the use of light greys, metallic wallpaper, high gloss cupboard and kitchen doors, mirrors, glass doors and a white epoxy floor on the outside balcony we have created a space that is neutral without being bland and a perfect cocoon for all the powerful artworks that have been collected over years by the owners. The floors throughout the apartment are a beautiful solid vintage oak broad plank that is timeless and classic and like the rest of the apartment will still be relevant in 20 years time. Budget is always a consideration in any renovation and one has to be able to say that the basic framework of your home will be able to survive time and hold its relevance going forward.
By using the same wallpaper finish, curtain fabric, flooring and paint colour throughout the apartment we have reinforced the sense of one space as opposed to a collection of different rooms. This in addition to the use of the same colour palette running throughout, we have created one large open space with individual accents that define the respective areas. Our accent fabrics are a collection of very special imported fabrics and have been used to best effect considering the budget. The owners wanted to use bold colours that created a space filled with energy and ‘joie de vivre‘.
The positioning of all the artworks was an amazing experience…they have all found the perfect position in the new home of their owners. The beauty of any home is an assimilation of all the items the owners have collected over the years that reflect their personalities and who they are as people…. all our homes showcase our souls and I do think that this is a home one walks into and just loves.
